Why Make Music Class Fun?

Fun. I don’t remember my music lessons being very fun as a kid.  Piano was a series of painstaking scales in a damp room and as someone who loved music, I never wanted to go. Needless to say, those lessons didn’t last very long.

Turns out, fun is not only a nice part of learning music but it’s an essential part of learning music. The more a child loves what they are doing, the more they will want to do it well.  The greater the joy, the greater the commitment. The greater the commitment, the greater the musical growth. Finally, the greater the musical growth, the greater the ability to make a child’s musical imaginings a reality. This part to me is the most exciting of all. It’s amazing really – children are so free of the formulas and musical rules that we set for ourselves as adults. They are bound only by the limits of their imagination – which fortunately is limitless.  Give them the skills to bring those ideas to life and that’s where the magic really happens.

This is at the core of what we do at the Brooklyn Music Factory.  Game based, fun learning in order to bring out the most in a child not only now, but for years to come.  Whether they end up making music around the campfire or on the stage, we are helping to create a musician for life.
