At Brooklyn Music Factory, learning music revolves around songwriting, games, and plenty of opportunities to make music as a community. Through songwriting and games, students are developing the real-life skills—strong ears, theory, skills & technique—musicians need to make music. (Hint: There’s a lot more to music than playing chords on an instrument!)
For students ages 9-11, we offer group band and instrument classes, as well as private lessons. Some students do one or the other, some do both!
In Rock Write Record bands, kids ages 9-11 come together to write and record songs, collaborate musically, level up their musicianship, and learn the skills to play in a band. Students develop advanced music fluencies by playing games and writing songs together with their band. Because instruction in Rock Write Record bands focuses on songwriting, students must be taking private lessons on their instrument outside of band class. At least 1 to 2 years of experience required.
Group instrument classes are a fun and creative place for kids to focus on a particular instrument (guitar, drums, piano or voice) and start developing instrument-specific skill and technique–while also writing songs and playing games designed to teach general music fluency (ie., music skills, like theory and ear training, that all musicians need, regardless of instrument). All in a fun & collaborative group setting… and for the cost of a group class!
Private lessons at Brooklyn Music Factory are a LOT different than the boring lessons many parents remember from their own childhoods. Instead of doing boring drills, students at BMF are playing music games and writing original songs to learn the principles of music, along with instrument-specific skills and technique. Plus, private lesson students come together twice a year to play their original songs in bands. Private lessons are available on guitar, bass, drums, piano, and voice.

He wanted to write his own song and was initially not on board with the collaborative format with kids he didn't know, but the counselors totally won him over and found a way for him to both do what he wanted and work with the other kids by writing a solo to be played as part of the band's song. Great staff! We all loved watching the end-of-day performance. Joshua BlitzApril 18, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My 5 year old with no music experience had a great week at spring break camp. Highly recommend. Daniel BatesApril 15, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We loved getting a live stream of the music room and all their hard work for the day song writing! Love that they have a carroll gardens location for the camps with they had the date night sessions in the hood too! Will be signing up for more! The wonderful humans at Brooklyn Music Factory prioritize connecting to the kids with caring, heart, respect and fun. It's a very friendly and flexible culture, which has successfully engaged both of my kids, ages 8 and 11. My kids not only love the place and the people, but they are maturing in their musicianship and understanding of the miracle of making music with others. We are VERY satisfied customers. I found them at a time when I was frustrated with remote lessons, was only playing music alone and had little performance experience. BMF has changed all of that. They have great space, with several tech enabled studios and a nice performance space. Performing is a focus of their curriculum, with an expectation that you perform at their showcases and gigs. I also joined their Adult Band program, so I take private and band lessons, and perform for both. Most importantly, the instructors at BMF are outstanding. Over the course of the year, I’ve worked with seven different BMF instructors, and I’ve been blown away by every one of them - I don’t know where Nate finds them. They are incredibly talented, knowledgeable and experienced, most coming from formal music education with impressive experience performing and teaching. Joining BMF has been an incredible growth journey for me, and if you’re an adult looking for your best option to grow as a musician, you should definitely check them out.
