How We Teach

Not Your Traditional Music Lesson

Brooklyn Music Factory Private lessons and classes are for students ages 4–adult. Unlike many other programs, BMF focuses on building musicians who are skilled on and off their instruments. Students play Big Music Games that have them moving around the room, training their ears and their voices. Students learn music theory and songwriting from a young age, so they can not only play music, but also understand what they’re playing. Students in both group classes and private lessons play together in bands during Songwriting Parties and gigs.

Our students play gigs & record their original songs.
We measure success by how many fun gigs our students play with one another and recording projects they collaborate on.
Game-based learning keeps our lessons and classes fun and effective.
We follow our own unique lesson architecture that challenges every student to use their ears before their eyes.
BMF teachers have regular meetings to develop curriculum, share successes and challenges and support each other.

The Role

What You'll Do

Responsibilities

Show up prepared to teach your classes, and communicate consistently with your families afterwards.

Attend all required meetings and special events (see schedule below).

Achieve your “BIG 3” (see below).

Skills & Experience

Songwriter: Must have pop/rock experience.

A minimum of 3 years classroom/teaching experience.

Experience working with kids ages 4+.

Strong communication skills

Must be creative and excited to learn new curriculum and share ideas with a team

Must be available for staff meetings and committed to learning online systems

Able to commit to consistently teaching every week from September–June

A commitment to developing relationships with students, families & fellow teachers

Schedule

Varies, but can include weekday afternoons/evenings and Saturdays.
Attend mid- and end-of-year student performances (usually held on the weekends in December, January, May, and June).
Attendance @ Monthly Meetings Required: All-staff and department meetings.
Be available during your work hours to communicate on SLACK

Compensation

$35–$50/hr based on experience and # of years at Brooklyn Music Factory.
Retirement savings (we match 3%).
Paid sick and safe leave.
Paid vacation days.

We are a performance-based business, meaning we measure all staff and faculty on their success in three key areas. These are foundational and essential to the financial & cultural health of the school.

Communicate

Consistent use of BMFConnect to communicate with families. Send all private lesson and band reports within 24 hours of the lesson or class. Send two semi-annual progress reports to all students. Utilize the BMF enrollment system to get your students re-enrolled.

Assign Resources

Utilizing unique BMF curriculum with families through BMFConnect. Assign unique BMF games and exercises. Supply written and/or audio recordings of students’ learning materials in the Gdrive lesson or band folder.

Build Community

Collaboration and retention. Your students participate in at least one community event per season (ex. Songwriting party or open mic). You retain your students throughout a season and re-enroll your students into the next season.
