The Fine Print 🔎

Absence, Lateness & Makeup Policy

10-Month Session

Students enrolled in private lessons are entitled to one makeup lesson per year. Makeup lessons are held at the same day and time as your regular lesson during the designated makeup week in June. (If you are not owed a makeup lesson, you will not have a lesson during the makeup week.) If you need to miss a lesson, please tell your teacher at least 24 hours in advance.

There are no makeup classes for bands.

In cases of inclement weather, Brooklyn Music Factory follows the New York City public schools and will close if schools close. There are no refunds or makeups for classes and lessons missed due to inclement weather.

Summer Session

There are no makeups for missed lessons. Depending on availability, lessons canceled with 24+ hours notice may be rescheduled at the teacher’s discretion and must take place within his/her available teaching hours. Please note, there are no weekend lessons during the summer.

Cancellation Policy

BMF requires 30 days advance notice of cancellation for band or private lesson enrollment, which allows us to fill the spot. Once notice is given, your remaining tuition is prorated accordingly. For example: John Q. Rockstar’s invoice is paid on the 1st of every month. He cancels on October 15. He then receives 4 more weeks of lessons and his November invoice is prorated accordingly. Please note: If stopping midyear, band students are strongly encouraged to commit through the band gig in January. All bands perform during the gig and the bands work hard in preparation. It’s difficult for the whole band when a member is not able to play.

Frequently Asked Questions

Classes & Offerings

All bands have the same class architecture, starting with a drum circle, followed by a Rock Pit game, finishing with the bandstand. Each activity has a purpose and focuses on a specific element of music - rhythm, harmony, melody, or songwriting. Class begins in the drum circle, setting goals for the day’s rehearsal, and then playing a fun rhythm game on the drums as a team. Next up in Rock Pit, students are up on their feet, perhaps diving into songwriting, maybe playing a harmony game to get them ready for the band stand. On the bandstand, students grab instruments and work on their original song, solidifying the musical BLAM (Big Lesson About Music) for the day!

In MiniKeys, students sing and play keyboard and drums. In Jam Band 101, students sing and play keyboard, drums, and guitar. Students in both MiniKeys and Jam Band 101 play all instruments during class. Students in Rock Write Record bands play designated instruments. (Though we encourage exploration at all levels!) Rock Write Record bands are for students who are taking private lessons on their instrument and typically have played in bands previously.

Brooklyn Music Factory supplies the instruments for in-class rehearsals, and every week you will receive a Band Report with specific practice suggestions for home. Because students in beginner bands play multiple instrument/s—and we do not expect students to have all the instruments at home—the practice suggestions will be exercises that don’t require specific instruments. Students can also play BLAM (Big Lessons About Music) games at home on Big Music Games, our mobile app.

What’s a BLAM game? BLAM games are games bands play in class with their teachers to learn different components of music fluency. They’re super fun and super effective! You can play the games on BMFConnect.

All bands—MiniKeys, Jam Band 101, and Rock Write Record bands—focus on writing original songs. Writing songs allows students to go “under the hood” of the songs and develop a knowledge and understanding of the components of music. We call that music fluency. Students are also SUPER excited about their own songs, which keeps them inspired and motivated.

We do not offer drop-in or free trial classes. However, the first two weeks are a trial period, so if you decide after the first or second class that BMF is not the right fit, you can cancel immediately and we will issue a refund for all tuition paid. If you need to stop after the trial period, we require 30 days’ written notice (please email Jessica at jessica@brooklynmusicfactory.com). These policies apply to both band and private lesson enrollment.

Birthdays

Yes. We have a dorm-size fridge onsite, and you are welcome to bring some goodies for the grownups.

You can be as general or specific as you’d like. Any of the information below will help us create a playlist the kids will love:

Your child’s favorite musical genre. Your child’s favorite artist. A list of specific songs your child loves. A Spotify playlist you’ve already created (approx. 30 mins).

Up to 20 kids (including the birthday boy/girl). The first 10 kids are included in the base price of the party; additional guests are $25 each.

Makeup Policy & Missed Classes

We do not offer makeup classes for group classes, because each group is working on different material. However, you will receive a Band Report for the missed class from your teacher--so you can see what the group worked on and any suggestions for practicing before the next class.

For private lessons, students are guaranteed one makeup lesson per school year, and most makeup lessons are held during the designated makeup week in June. Students who are owed a makeup lesson come at their regular day/time for a lesson. (Students who are not owed a makeup lesson have the week off.)

Brooklyn Music Factory follows the New York City public schools and will close if schools close. There are no refunds or makeups for classes and lessons missed due to inclement weather.

Billing

Tuition for after-school lessons and classes covers weekly classes, except holidays, from September-June, and the tuition is based on 33 scheduled classes/lessons per school year. The tuition is charged to the credit card on file in 10 equal installments on the first of each month. (Tuition will be prorated for students who start after the first class of the year.)

Sure! Just click here to update your card info.

Holidays and planned closures are accounted for in our annual lesson count, so even though some months have more or fewer lessons than others, your tuition will be the same from month to month. Remember, the tuition is charged in equal monthly installments and does not change month to month based on the number of scheduled lessons.

You’re guaranteed to receive 33 classes per school year (September-June). This total annual tuition is divided into 10 equal monthly installments, so your tuition will be the same every month, even though classes start and end mid-month in September and June, respectively.
