How it works here

Nothing like
the lessons

you remember

Songwriting first

They write their own music

Students learn rhythm, theory, ear training and technique by writing songs they actually want to play — so practice stops being a fight.

Bands, not recitals

They play with other kids

Private lesson students join bands twice a year for real gigs. Class students play together every single week.

Same teacher all year

They build a relationship

Weekly, September through June, with a teacher who knows them. That continuity is why families stay for years.

Why families choose us

Six reasons parents
stay for years

01

Songwriting-based curriculum

We wrote our own method, the Songwriters Journey, and license it to music schools around the country. Your child isn’t working through someone else’s method book.

02

Teachers who stay

Working musicians who’ve taught here for years, not a rotating roster. Your child keeps the same teacher all season, September through June.

03

Real gigs, not recitals

Students perform their own songs on our in-house stage several times a year — with a band, in front of people who love them.

04

Small by design

Classes cap at five or six. Nobody sits in the back. Nobody gets skipped.

05

Two weeks to change your mind

Cancel after the first or second class and we refund everything. After that, 30 days’ notice, any time before June.

06

Sixteen years in Gowanus

Founded in 2010 by two Brooklyn parents. We’ve taught thousands of local kids, and plenty of their younger siblings.

Musicians big and small are encouraged to develop their path in their own unique way. This is a place for budding musicians that are internally driven by their love of music and the joy they get from developing their skills and collaborating with others. Our multi-instrument musician has been taught and mentored by BMF for almost 10 years.

We just picked our kiddo (4 year old) up from his second day of Spring Break camp at BMF. Yesterday he said it was the best camp ever. I wanted to make sure before I shared my review, so I asked again today, and he said he had even more fun! We have been a BMF family for many years with my older kids (and have only great things to say about the music lessons!), but this is our first round of camp with a little one. He tends to be shy and anxious to try new things, but he said he loved the teachers and he made friends. He has been humming his original song all afternoon, and his only complaint is that eventually we have to go back to school and cannot go back to camp until this summer. I love the flexibility they offer in scheduling and that they spend time outside. He is happy and tired at the end of the day...I cannot ask for more than that!

We took our daughter here for a single-day song-writing camp and she had an absolute blast. We worried about whether she’d feel alone since she went in not knowing anyone else and having never stepped foot in the music factory. But she eased right in.

Our kiddo LOVES Brooklyn Music Factory. The counselors are fun, knowledgeable, and bring out the best in the kiddos. The livestreams of their performances is brilliant. It's been wonderful to see our kiddo grow in their music making and confidence at all the same time. Thanks BMF!!

Ages 4 through adult

Find your place to make music

Every age learns differently. Choose the stage that fits your musician
and discover the BMF classes and lessons designed for them.

MiniKeys

MiniKeys gives four- and five-year-olds their first experience making music as a band. Through songwriting and playful music games, kids begin developing rhythm, melody, ear training, musical vocabulary, creativity, and the foundations of music fluency.

Jam Band 101

Jam Band 101 is a fun, collaborative class where kids ages 6-8 develop beginning music fluencies by playing games and writing songs together. Perfect for total beginners, as well as for kids with 1-2 years of band and/or private lesson experience, Jam Band 101 is a fun and creative class where students learn the principles of music and songwriting. Plus, they get to sing and play the keyboard, guitar and drums every week–becoming familiar with all of the instruments and how they fit together in a band.

Group Instrument Classes

Group instrument classes are a fun and creative place for kids to focus on a particular instrument (guitar, drums, piano or voice) and start developing instrument-specific skill and technique–while also writing songs and playing games designed to teach general music fluency (ie., music skills, like theory and ear training, that all musicians need, regardless of instrument). All in a fun & collaborative group setting… and for the cost of a group class!

Rock Write Record

In Rock Write Record bands, kids ages 9-11 come together to write and record songs, collaborate musically, level up their musicianship, and learn the skills to play in a band. Students develop advanced music fluencies by playing games and writing songs together with their band. Because instruction in Rock Write Record bands focuses on songwriting, students must be taking private lessons on their instrument outside of band class. At least 1 to 2 years of experience required.

Private Lessons

Private lessons at Brooklyn Music Factory are a LOT different than the boring lessons many parents remember from their own childhoods. Instead of doing boring drills, our students are playing music games and writing original songs to learn the principles of music, along with instrument-specific skills and technique. Plus, private lesson students come together twice a year at gigs where they play their original songs in bands. Private lessons are available on guitar, bass, drums, piano, and voice.

Rock Write Record 2

In Rock Write Record bands, kids ages 12 and older come together to write and record songs, collaborate musically, level up their musicianship, and learn the skills to play in a band. Students develop advanced music fluencies by playing games and writing songs together with their band. Because instruction in Rock Write Record bands focuses on songwriting, students must be taking private lessons on their instrument outside of band class. Experience required.

Private Lessons

Teens LOVE making and learning music at Brooklyn Music Factory. Working one-on-one with our supportive and encouraging teachers, students develop instrument-specific skills, music fluency, and confidence. Lessons focus on popular music—rock, pop, jazz—and original songwriting, so students are playing the music they love. Plus, students in private lessons have regular opportunities to share and perform their music together at coffee houses and showcases. Private lessons are available on guitar, bass, drums, piano, and voice.

Adult Bands

It’s time to make your dream of playing in a band come true! At Brooklyn Music Factory, our adult band program is all about collaborating with other music lovers. Bands meet weekly to rehearse with one of our supportive teachers. Some bands write originals, others learn to play their favorite songs. All the bands are super fun and super encouraging. No experience required. All levels welcome. Bands come together twice a year to share and perform their music.

Private Lessons

Music lessons aren’t just for kids! At BMF, you can revisit the instrument from your childhood, take the next step on your musical journey, or simply try out something new. Your teacher will work with you to outline goals that get you excited and meet you where you are. Choose the music that YOU are interested in learning, and BMF will help you make your music dreams come true. (Or at least learn something new, while also having fun.) Lessons available on piano, guitar, bass, drums, and voice. Students come together twice a year to perform and share their music.

Our own curriculum

The Songwriters
